You may be looking for a new career in sales or you may be looking to advance your career. There are many different jobs available from Trainee sales representative positions to those for a Sales Director. Choosing your sales career path can be difficult. This will often depend on your experience, at the lower level or entry point companies will appoint people with limited or no sales experience if you have the right attitude.

If you want to change to a sales career you may want to consider taking a sales support role or a position in Telemarketing. This will give you ‘hands on’ sales experience and may help you to advance your career. If you are from a technical background many companies are looking for Technical Sales people or Sales Engineers and will often provide initial sales training to the right candidate.

Most sales positions are commission based and quite often have open ended commission packages providing unlimited earnings. Make sure when looking for a sales position that the On Target Earnings (OTE) are realistic and a reasonable basic salary is offered.

If you are self motivated, hard working, competitive and want to become a high achiever with unlimited earning potential then a career in sales could be for you.

You may need to be an excellent communicator at all levels, have the ability to achieve set targets and be able to work on your own initiative. If you are currently working in sales and would like to progress further your must ensure that you have a proven track record in sales so that future employers can see your potential.

Job Hunting

If you are searching for a job today specifically, there are the traditional methods of job searching, which includes responding to newspaper ads, applying directly to employers, and signing on with a recruitment agency. With the advent of the internet, there now exists another, more powerful, medium with which to search for jobs.

The internet is fast becoming a dominant force in bringing candidates and employers together in an effective way. There are now numerous "Job Boards" on the internet that advertise vacancies from all over the UK.

These Job Boards on the internet are a very effective resource for candidates, recruitment agencies and employers. As a candidate searching for a job on the internet, you can do so from your home, as long as you have a PC and an internet connection. If you are seeking employment in the Sales area then the job website sales-recruitment.co.uk makes your task very simple, it offers you a direct resource for Sales job vacancies that are currently listed on the major job boards.

Additionally, you can register on these Job Boards for vacancy alerts and job news sent to you via email. You simply specify your requirements for the type of job (eg. Sales Careers), and you are then alerted immediately a vacancy that may be of interest is lodged on the Job Board.

A recent trend in internet recruitment is that employers and candidates are becoming very specific in their requirements, with a strong emphasis now on local recruitment. Companies are very interested in finding candidates that are local to their business. The reason here is that companies can save on relocation costs. Most employers are looking for skills that closely match the requirements of the job. This saves them additional training costs. Given this, it is important to emphasize your experience on the CV. Also bear in mind that recruitment agents will really only be interested in promoting you if they have a specific vacancy that they believe you are a good match for. If you do not have the skills, experience or education required for the current vacancies, then your CV will most likely not be considered. This does make things difficult if you are trying to change industry sectors. Experience is generally the key! So look for vacancies that you can match with your skills and experience.

If you obtain vacancies that match more closely your skills, then you can be more confident in getting the job. This will come across in the interview and will hopefully be a major influence in you securing a job.
